What happens when a Cartoonist becomes a Copywriter?
The idea began in a cage. But creativity needs to fly. And be of service to others.
“The Cage” was Journalism. It was once a fancy grand cage with exotic birds and plenty of room to flap one’s wings. Then it began to shrink. And shrink. Until it contained only a few disheveled parakeets and a half-dead hummingbird. There were still a few cages that needed some art on the spotted newsprint floor, but it was high time to fly again.
But fly where? And serve who?
I quickly discovered the traits that make a good cartoonist (and journalist), would also make a good marketer. Both jobs are built on the same foundation: A hunger for learning, a penchant for research, and an empathy for the reader’s perspective. But most importantly: the desire and ability to tell a good story.
And now my creative skills would not only be in service to disheveled media parakeets but also to small business owners like you. People who don’t have their own marketing departments, yet need help with strategy and engaging copy.
After a few years of online training with The Creative Copywriter Academy and The Australian Writers’ Centre, I was ready for takeoff. Yet, I hesitated.
How was I different from the flocks of other copywriters? What unique value might I offer my clients?
An idea landed on my shoulder: they’d get their own Power Animal.
A free-range bird who understands the mainstream marketing cage, but is not limited by it. A mind that believes good storytelling and trust are more influential than algorithms and formulas. And an artist who understands how to use word and image effectively.
I’d be an Email Service Animal for small business owners, and use my skills to help them succeed.
The jets fired up. The tray tables locked. And Copy Pigeon lifted off the tarmac.
With over 28 years of experience as a professional creative in journalism and communications, I use my skills to help support and grow other small businesses. Maybe you need a writer for your weekly newsletter (copy and cartoons). Or you need a Welcome Sequence. Or you’re possibly seeking a long-term partnership to utilize the benefits of Segmentation, Automation, and Personalization with your Email Service Provider. This is why I created Copy Pigeon. If you are looking for a writer, an artist, and a slightly offbeat mind to help grow your business, Copy Pigeon is your bird.

A HISTORY OF PIGEON EXCELLENCE
Pigeons get a bad rap. They’re often seen as dirty urban rat-birds who poop on statues.
But pigeons have been working in the direct mail business since King Tut was swaddled in crinkly gold diapers.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF HOMING PIGEONS
5th century BCE: Cyrus the Great established the first network of carrier pigeons in Assyria and Persia.
776 BCE: During the first Olympic Games every athlete had a homing pigeon to carry news of a potential victory to their village.
58-51 BCE: Julius Caesar used carrier pigeons during his conquest in Gaul.
1840: Reuters began using pigeons to spread the news.
2024: Copy Pigeon was founded to bring this tradition of excellence to your email marketing needs.
